Anchorage Alaska
Although not the state capital (Juneau has that honor), Anchorage serves as the economic and political heart of Alaska and almost half the states population lives here. Just the name Alaska conjures up adventure, raw natural beauty -- glaciers, mountains and seas, unmatched the world around -- fascinating wildlife, a unique cultural heritage, and independent, pioneering people. Population: 291,826 residents as of the 2010 Census.
Climate: Well, its cold here, what do you expect from a subarctic climate? However, temperatures are somewhat moderated by maritime influences. Anchorage gets 17 inches of rain per year and 76 inches of snow.
Cost of living: Everything has to be brought in to this area, so the cost of living in Anchorage is 31% greater than the national average due to these transportation costs.
Housing costs: Housing is expensive, too, at 41.3% greater than the national average. The median retirement home cost in Anchorage will run about $247,900.
Colleges and Universities: Opportunities for Lifelong Education (OLÉ!) is program created to give Anchorage adults a place to continue learning together, and is affiliated with the University of Alaska Anchorage. Its courses are specifically designed for people over the age of 50.
Transportation:Ted Stevens Anchorage International offers frequent inter- and intrastate flights. Flying is a common method of transportation to the interior, and boats and ferries provide access to other coastal destinations. The Alaska Railroad goes south to Whittier and Seward, and north to Fairbanks. People Mover is the local bus service provider.
Travel and tourism: Anchorage provides everything from first-class hotels to quaint B&B's, four-star restaurants to small cafes, an outstanding Museum of History and Art as well as a starting point for a multitude of outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, climbing and camping. The city itself has 10,946 acres of municipal parkland, 250 miles of trails and greenbelts that link neighborhoods with surrounding natural open spaces and wildlife habitat.
