Birmingham Alabama
Birminghams checkered past has earned it the nickname Bombingham due to racial unrest in the 60s, and an industrial economy inspired another unappealing nickname, The Pittsburgh of the South. However today Birmingham has a surprising amount of culture to offer, and has claimed its civil rights struggle with a new nickname: Diverse City. Population: 212,237 according to the 2010 Census.
Climate: Birmingham has hot summers, mild winters, and abundant rainfall - 59 inches of rain per year to be precise. No snow, however.
Cost of living: Retirement incomes go farther where the cost of living is 13% less than the national average.
Housing costs: Even more affordable are retirement homes which average 54% less than the national average. The median home cost in Birmingham is unbelievably low at $89,700.
Colleges and Universities: Jefferson State College has a division called Adult Studies which will probably include courses of interest to lifelong learners. And of course there are a myriad of offerings at the University of Alabama.
Transportation:Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority runs a public bus system for the metro area. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport serves more than 3 million passengers every year.
Travel and tourism: Birmingham has four interesting neighborhoods to explore: Five Points, near the University of Alabama Birmingham; Lakeview, home to one of the Souths greatest bars; Homewood, an upscale shopping strip with a pedestrian-friendly layout and a small-town vibe; and the Civil Rights District, an unforgettable cluster of attractions at the edge of downtown.
