Chico California

Chico has an all-American, oak-shaded downtown and a sizable university making it a social and cultural hub with good restaurants, coffeehouses, nightclubs, bars and entertainment venues. The City of Chico is rich in Native American and Gold Rush history. General John Bidwell was among several miners who discovered gold on the Feather River. The Bidwell Mansion and sprawling Bidwell Park are his legacy to the town. Population: As of the 2010 census, the population was 86,187.

Climate: Chico has a moderate climate with four seasons. Summers are hot, and there is lots of sunshine to enjoy retirement pursuits such as golf. The city gets 26 inches of rain, and on average, there are 249 sunny days per year.

Cost of living: Surprisingly expensive, the cost of living in Chico is 45% greater than the national average.

Housing costs: Retirement housing is also pricey, at 31% greater than the national average. The median home cost in Chico is $271,500.

Colleges and Universities: California State University at Chico has an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. This program is a peer-led, learning in retirement organization that offers a wide variety of non-credit classes and activities for adults age 60+ or retired.

Transportation:Chico Municipal Airport is served by United Express, and the North Valley Shuttle provides daily service to Sacramento International Airport. Amtrak’s Coast Starlighter stops here. Chico was once named "America's Best Bike Town" by Bicycle magazine, and pedicabs are an interesting form of transportation commonly available downtown during the evenings.

Travel and tourism: Retirees can beat the summertime heat by taking a dip in one of the swimming holes in shady Bidwell Park, or by tubing down the Sacramento River. Sipping a cold beer at the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, near downtown, is yet another warm weather treat.
