Crescent City California


Crescent City is located on a crescent-shaped bay of the Pacific Ocean, and was founded in 1853 as a seaport and supply center for inland gold mines. However, few old buildings remain since half the town was destroyed by a tsunami in 1964. The local economy depends heavily on shrimp and crab fishing, and retirees who enjoy fresh seafood as well as casting their own line will benefit from this. Population: There were 7,643 residents as of the 2010 census.

Climate: It’s wet here, with annual rainfall that averages 75 inches. However, summers are pleasant with temperatures that average 60 – 70 degrees, and winters are mild with temperatures averaging 40 – 50 degrees.

Colleges and Universities: College of the Redwoods is the local community college in Crescent City which offers classes for learning in retirement.

Transportation:Highway 101 is the main coastal route. The local airport is Jack McNamara Field from which the majority of flights connect to San Francisco International Airport.

Travel and tourism: Crescent City offers an abundance of outdoor recreational activities due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the Smith River and Klamath River, Redwood National and State Parks, and the Smith River National Recreation Area.
