Decatur is located in North Alabama (the Tennessee Valley), just southwest of Huntsville and about an hour north of Birmingham. Decatur became a city on June 16, 1820; it was originally a river crossing for settlers west of the Appalachian Mountains. History abounds here with The Old State Bank which is the oldest bank building in Alabama at 173 years old, the largest Victorian era home district in Alabama, and Alabamas oldest opera house, the Cotaco Opera House. Population: 55,683 as of the 2010 census.
