Eureka California

Eureka is situated on the shores of Humboldt Bay along the spectacular Northern California coastline 280 miles north of San Francisco. It is bordered on one side by the bay, and on the other by mountains lush with giant redwoods. A few blocks off Highway 101 is their Old Town, where there are colorful Victorian mansions, impressive museums and a refurbished waterfront. Eureka is a magnet for artists, so photographs, paintings and sculpture abound in restaurants, bars and public spaces. Population: 27,191 as of the 2010 census.

Climate: Eureka has mild, rainy winters and cool, dry summers. It gets 39 inches of rain per year and rarely has any snowfall.

Transportation:The area has a full service airport, Arcata-Eureka Airport, 15 miles to the north. Public bus transportation is provided by the Eureka Transit Service and The Redwood Transit System. Amtrak offers a Thruway Bus which connects with the Coast Starlighter route.

Travel and tourism: Eureka has a variety of cultural opportunities including active artisan, arts, and theater groups. Retirees who enjoy outdoor recreation will find many activities such as boating, sport fishing, kayaking, hunting, birding and backpacking right in their backyards.
