Fairbanks Alaska


Fairbanks had its origins in 1901, when a trader could not get his riverboat any further up the Chena River. It then became a boom town when gold was discovered in 1908. Today it still serves as a gateway to the North Slope for the Alaska oil fields. Fairbanks is known as the “Golden Heart City because its people pride themselves on their generosity of spirit, hospitality, and friendliness. Population: 31,535 according to the 2010 census.

Climate: Summer days are filled with endless sunshine even at midnight, and wintry nights glow with the Northern Lights. Winter temperatures can reach 60 below zero, so dressing warmly is an art. Fairbanks gets 12 inches of rain per year and snowfall of 64 inches.

Cost of living: The cost of living in Fairbanks is 39% greater than the national average.

Housing costs: Housing is not quite as expensive, but 17.9% greater than the national average. The median retirement home cost in Fairbanks is $190,100.

Colleges and Universities: Retirees will be pleased to find an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. OLLI classes are taught by its members, and include stimulating courses, lectures, educational travel, and special interest groups.

Transportation:Alaska Airlines offers good air connections to Anchorage, and Frontier Flying flies to Anchorage as well as throughout Arctic Alaska. The Alaska Railroad provides service to Denali National Park and Anchorage.

Travel and tourism: Retirees will enjoy experiencing transportation from yesteryear - sternwheelers, bush planes, railroads and sled dog teams - which provide entertaining tours. For those who like sports, they can tee off late one summer evening under the midnight sun or view a baseball game at 10:30 p.m. with no artificial lights. Cultural opportunities abound with local fine arts, a symphony orchestra, and world-renowned theatrical and musical performances year-round.
