Juneau Alaska
Juneau is probably one of the most beautiful state capitals in the U.S. Its historic downtown clings to a mountainside beneath snowcapped peaks, and its narrow streets lead you past a waterfront bustling with cruise ships, fishing boats and floatplanes zipping in and out. It is unique in that the only way you can get there is by air or boat (or maybe dogsled); it is not connected to the state highway system. Population: 31,275 as of the 2010 census.
Climate: Juneaus winters are moist and long, but surprising not as cold as its latitude would suggest due to the influence of the Pacific Ocean. Juneau gets 57 inches of rain per year and snowfall of 95 inches.
Cost of living: Being so isolated drives up the cost of living, and Juneaus is 40% greater than the national average.
Housing costs: The median retirement home value is 66.3% greater than the national average. Retirees can expect to pay around $288,500 for an average home.
Colleges and Universities: The University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau has opportunities for lifelong learning that retirees may find of interest.
Transportation:Alaska Air serves Juneau, and smaller companies like Wings of Alaska provide service to isolated communities. The Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System offers transportation between cities in Alaska along its many miles of seacoast.
Travel and tourism: As Alaskas cruise-ship capital, Juneau is the gateway to many attractions, including Glacier Bay National Park and Admiralty Island National Monument. Juneaus compact downtown makes it easy to walk to some of the many attractions such as the state capitol, Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, several museums and historic South Franklin Street, where turn-of-the-century buildings today are gift shops, restaurants and pubs. Glaciers and whale watching are both within minutes of downtown.
