San Diego California

It is said that San Diego lacks weather, but people who retire there seem to be surviving just fine without it. This lovely climate defines the area, and life is lived outdoors here from beaches and boardwalks to the fields and footpaths of sprawling Balboa Park. This climate promotes the enjoyment of a favorite retirement pastime, and San Diego County features 92 golf courses. Population: San Diego is California's second largest city and the United States' eighth largest, with a population of nearly 1.3 million residents.

Climate: San Diego has warm, dry summers and mild winters. It gets only 10 inches of rain, and enjoys 266 sunny days per year.

Cost of living: As with other appealing retirement areas in California, the cost of living in San Diego is 31% greater than the national average.

Housing costs: Housing is even more expensive, estimated to be 108% greater than the U.S. average. The median home cost in San Diego is $392,000.

Colleges and Universities: It’s always good news for continuing education in retirement when there is an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in town. San Diego State University offers university quality courses for adults 50 and better in an atmosphere of meaningful intellectual and social engagement without the pressure of grades and homework.

Transportation:San Diego International Airport, also known as Lindbergh Field, offers scheduled flights to the rest of the United States including Hawaii. In addition to public transportation like trolleys, buses and trains, cycling is a viable method of getting around town. In 2006, San Diego was rated as the best city for cycling among U.S. cities with a population over 1 million.

Travel and tourism: San Diego offers a dazzling array of world-class attractions such as the world-famous San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, SeaWorld San Diego and LEGOLAND California for retirees to entertain their grandkids. Nature-conscious retirees can find endless opportunities to hike, camp, fish, and observe wildlife. And the idyllic climate and 70 miles of pristine beaches provide year-round outdoor recreation, such as surfing, boating, sailing and swimming.
