Yuma Arizona

Yuma is the county seat and largest city in Arizona outside the metro areas of Phoenix and Tucson. Geographically, Yuma’s location as the safest spot to cross the Colorado River was a magnet for travelers from Spanish explorers to Okies fleeing the Dust Bowl. This mighty river, which defines the border between Arizona and California, runs along the city's northern edge. Population: 93,064 as of the 2010 Census, but this number doubles during the peak travel months of January, February and March with the arrival of sun-seeking snowbirds.

Climate: Retirees who love the sun flock here, where the average annual rainfall is around three inches a year, and humidity is generally low. Nights can be chilly in the winter, but hard freezes are rare, allowing vegetables and citrus to flourish through the winter. Yuma boasts 308 sunny days per year.

Cost of living: The cost of living in Yuma is 9% greater than the national average.

Housing costs: Good news for retirees, the average cost of a home runs about 15% less than the national average. The median retirement home cost in Yuma is $127,000.

Colleges and Universities: Retirees may find continuing education courses of interest at the Yuma Learning Center on the University of Phoenix campus. The City of Yuma Parks and Recreation Department also offers a wide variety of year-round activities for adults 50 years of age and older.

Transportation:Yuma has direct daily commercial air service to Phoenix (U.S. Airways) and Los Angeles (United/Continental), or retirees may take advantage of the scheduled shuttle van service to and from the Phoenix airport. Amtrak and Greyhound also serve the area.

Travel and tourism: Yuma is commonly considered as the place that has more sunshine than any other city on earth, so it is a natural for all kinds of outdoor activities, from boating to golf to off-roading. Retirees will enjoy some of the many festivals all year round, and even take a day trip south of the border. For evening entertainment, there are three casinos.
